We’re pretty modest people at MCW Carpentry, but we must tell you that our work is far superior to that of most other remodelers and carpenters. As craftsmen and artisans, we do it the right way. We’re not like those large New Jersey contractors who try to push you toward a cookie-cutter project. We’ll help you conceive and define what you need—not what we find easy to build—and then we’ll construct it to the highest standards.

But although we don’t like to brag – well – MCW Carpentry was, again, given the “Best of Houzz” award! That’s two years in a row – 2018 and 2019. Not bad.

What Sets Us Apart

  • Innovation with traditional craftsmanship: Our unique combination of traditional skills, creativity, and commitment to green building principles keeps us at the forefront of our profession.
  • Accurate estimates: We don’t lowball the estimate just to get a job and then add expensive change orders after work begins. Our quotes are based on the use of top quality materials and fine craftsmanship.
  • On time, in budget: Our use of an industry-proven system of project planning and implementation means that we will work within your budget and time requirements.
  • Over 23 years of experience: Our clients have learned that experience counts. MCW Carpentry makes fewer errors in costing, constructing, scheduling, and time management than other contractors.

Transforming Your Vision into Reality

Master carpentry is a creative and conceptual practice that depends on clear communication with our clients. We help you define your design needs and transform your vision into a reality. Matthew C. Weiss

Owner, Master Carpenter

President, Professional Woodworkers Guild of Upper NJ

Certified Graduate Remodeler | Certified Graduate Builder | Certified Green Professional

A lifelong love of carpentry was born when Matt helped his father remodel their family home in the 1970s and spent summers in Germany helping out in his grandfather’s cabinet and window shop. But it was when Matt went to work for premier carpenter-remodeler Frank Schulte that his avid interest became a professional career. Working with Schulte, Matt himself became a master carpenter, doing high-end remodeling work in Essex County for the next ten years. Their specialty was restoring the interiors and exteriors of historic homes with rigorous faithfulness to the original designs.

When, after 50 years in business, Frank Schulte retired in 1994, Matt started MCW Carpentry. Matt says, “When my boss retired, I took on several jobs, looking around at the quality of workmanship being done by other contractors. I saw there was a need for skilled and trained craftsmen, so I started my own business. In 2000 I bought and restored an old building in East Orange, which is now my office and restoration woodworking shop.”

Matt, who is also a marathon runner, says, “We never say no to a difficult job. That’s what makes life interesting and challenging—using one’s brain to figure out the puzzles.”
